Hollywood had it coming...

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is a tale of adventure on the open road. When Dante and Randal (of Clerks fame) get a restraining order to keep the punchy Jay and his hetero life-mate, Silent Bob, from selling drugs in front of the Quick Stop convenience store, their lives are suddenly empty. They find new purpose when their friend, Brodie, informs them a movie is being made featuring two infamous characters based on their likenesses. After visiting one of the creators of the Bluntman and Chronic, Holden McNeil, they set out to get what fat movie cash they deserve and hopefully put an end to people slandering them on the Internet. Along the way, they learn the rules of the road from a hitchhiking George Carlin, ride with a group of gorgeous jewel thieves, and incur the wrath of a hapless wildlife marshal for liberating an orangutan named Suzanne. The quest takes them from New Jersey to Hollywood where a showdown involving the police, the jewel thieves, and the Bluntman and Chronic filmmakers will decide the fate of Suzanne, Jay, Silent Bob, and their good names.

Heather Graham was originally offered Shannon Elizabeth's role, but she turned it down because she couldn't figure out why her character would fall in love with Jay.

Shannon Elizabeth originally read for a minor role but so impressed director Kevin Smith that he decided to cast her in the lead.

David Duchovny was offered a small role, but eventually had to turn it down due to his commitment to "The X Files" (1993).

Brodie's comic book store, "Brodie's Secret Stash," is a slightly altered version of Kevin Smith's real-life comic book store, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, in Red Bank, New Jersey.

The sub-plot incolcing the monkey theft, and a few whole lines of dialogue, are taken directly from Kevin Smith's comic "Chasing Dogma," which detailed Jay and Silent Bob's journey from New Jersey to Illinois in between Chasing Amy and Dogma.

Although Randal and Dante are not the last characters featured in the film, they were the last two characters filmed when production wrapped. Kevin Smith felt at the time of this movie's production, he should end the series with the two characters that started it. Smith has recently reopened the saga of the Askewniverse with The Passion of the Clerks

The canyon setting for the diner scene is the same location used for the filming of many episodes of "Star Trek" (1966), most notably the episode "Arena" where Kirk fights the Gorn, the giant green lizard. As a further homage to that episode, the diner in the scene has a sign over the door which identifies it as "The Arena Diner."

This is the fifth film in Kevin Smith's intricately interconnected View Askewniverse series (the first four being Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma). The movies are all linked by characters, themes and events and each contains numerous references to the others.

The medical company that Jay and Silent Bob break into is called "Provasic". This is the name of the "Miracle Drug" in The Fugitive which the movie goes on to spoof.

The character name "Marshall Willenholly" refers to Marshall, Will, and Holly, characters from the TV series Land of the Lost

The name of one of Jay and Silent Bob's online critic, "Magnolia-Fan", was inspired by a feud on the View Askew website's message board. After Kevin Smith posted a strongly negative review of Magnolia, fans of Paul Thomas Anderson swarmed the board and criticized Smith.

Names of the security guards at Miramax are all references to comic book characters, including Gordon (James Gordon, Gotham City Police Commissioner), Shaw (Sebastian and Shinobi Shaw, members of the Hellfire club), and Akins (another Gotham City Commissioner.)

The rocket pack from The Rocketeer, the Cirrus X-3, is hanging beside the bongsaber in the utility display in the Bluntcave.

When Jay and Silent Bob find Suzanne on the set of Scream 4, the lead actress is surprised that a monkey was playing the role of the killer - Wes Craven never told the actors in the Scream sequels who the killer was.

When Jay and Silent Bob are running from the guards on the Miramax lot, they knock over a man in a Daredevil costume. Kevin Smith was a writer on "Daredevil" for Marvel Comics.

The word "fuck" is used 228 times.

The original plot involved Jay and Silent Bob trying to save their beloved Quik Stop.

When Jay and Silent Bob are trying to escape the Miramax security guards they come across a group of people shooting a fake Daredevil movie. The man directing the fake Daredevil movie is Mark Steven Johnson, the man who went on to direct the real Daredevil movie, staring Ben Affleck.

The fictitious website "Movie Poop Shoot" is a major plot point. Movie Poop Shoot existed as an actual website before the film's release. An obvious parody of film websites, the site contained inflammatory posts toward "Bluntman and Chronic Strike Back" which were later read in the movie (including the immortal "Fuck Jay and Silent Bob, fuck them up their stupid asses"). The thread ends with Jay's "You are the ones who are the ball-lickers." The false site also served as the home of the internet-only trailers for the film. Movie Poop Shoot has recently been converted into a bona fide website, containing news and columns about movies, comic books, and music.

Kevin Smith's fan base is so loyal that during the theatrical run of Scary Movie 2, many people bought tickets for the film simply to see the trailer for "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". After the trailer ran, many movie-goers left the theatre.

In an effort to drive up the box office gross for his film, Kevin Smith gave away autographed mini-posters to all fans that sent in ticket stubs indicating they went to see it on 24 or 25 August 2001.

This was the first film that both Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill (Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars Saga) had appeared in together since Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Apparently neither of them knew the other was in the film until a few weeks after shooting had been completed.

When the jewel thieves get their pizza, the name of the pizza place is "Joe's Marvelous Pizza". The man delivering the pizza is Joe Quesada the editor in chief of Marvel Comics.

Director Trademark: Numerous references to Star Wars and its sequels throughout the film including, of course, the title.

Director Trademark: Numerous references to Jaws

Director Trademark: When the jewel thieves talk about their heist they have a banner that its their 37th heist. The scene of Bluntman and Chronic that Jay and Bob end up in is introduced as "Scene 37, take 1"

Baby Silent Bob is played by Harley Quinn Smith, daughter of director Kevin Smith.

Originally, Kevin Smith wanted Quentin Tarantino, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and Uma Thurman to spoof a Pulp Fiction (1994) sequel where Travolta and Jackson would play Jay and Silent Bob like characters, and Tarantino would play an angry, abusive director, and Uma Thurman would become a self-obsessed actress. All four actors/actresses accepted, but the idea was dropped due to budget and timing constraints. Another idea was to have Seth Green appear as Jay's actor replacement, but had to turn the role down due to scheduling conflicts with Austin Powers in Goldmember

According to Kevin Smith, the film was intended as a controversy-free comedy in response to his previous film, the controversy-plagued Dogma (1999). He did not succeed, having raised the ire of gay rights activists over its gay jokes. Smith, in his DVD commentary, denies that his humor was intended as insulting.

Missy is played by Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, director Kevin Smith's wife.

The voice of the security guard on the other end of the radio used by Deidrich Bader is Ben Affleck.

The movie ends with a freeze frame as a spoof to Purple Rain

The phrase "Fuck Jay and Silent Bob. Fuck them up their stupid asses" became so popular that it was used in just about every talkback on Ain't It Cool News (Such as "Fuck Osama bin Laden. Fuck him up his stupid ass.")

When the van thought (by Jay) to contain Justice blows up, the music in the background says (in a Latin chant-style) "Justice is dead... or so Jay thinks"

The voice of Scooby in the "Scooby-Doo" scene is voiced by Mark Hamill.

The film originally received an NC-17 rating. Numerous scenes had to be cut down for an R, including footage of George Carlin and Jay and Silent Bob's arrival to Hollywood.

Alanis Morrisette's appearance, marks one of the few times in movie history where an actress/actor appears for the first time in the movie, after being listed in the end credits.

Cast members Seann William Scott, Jason Biggs, Eli Marienthaland Shannon Elizabeth were filming this movie around the same time as American Pie 2

Because Ben Affleck reprised his role as Holden from Chasing Amy (1997), Kevin Smith had originally wanted to cast different actors to play Affleck and Matt Damon in the Good Will Hunting spoof. Smith first considered casting Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, then Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans, before finally deciding to cast Affleck and Damon as themselves.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon mention that one of the reasons to do a film is because they owe the director a favor. It was writer/director Kevin Smith who brought the script of Good Will Hunting to Miramax.

Kevin Smith gave Eliza Dushku the nickname "Duck Shoot" during production after accidentally mispronouncing her last name.

Jennifer Schwalbach Smith (Missy), one of the lesbian jewel thieves, is Kevin Smith's real-life wife, making her film debut. Several scenes of her making out with Ali Larter (Chrissy) were among those cut to prevent the film from getting an NC-17 rating.

In Hollywood, Jay asks actor Jason Biggs (playing himself) if he ever got it on with "that Russian chick." This is a reference to the character Nadia from the American Pie films - who was played by Shannon Elizabeth.

Shannon Elizabeth, (Justice) came up with the idea for her character to wear glasses.

Jay's and Pumpkin Escobar's dealer union cards are signed by director Kevin Smith as President and actor Jason Mewes as Secretary of the International Fellowship of Marijuana Distributors, Crack-Cocaine Wholesaler, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States and Canada.

The high amount of profanity caused some challenges for those hired to translate the film into other languages. In the DVD release, the word "merde" (which means "shit") is substituted for "fuck" in the French language soundtrack.

The website www.moviepoopshoot.com which Jay and Silent Bob go to, was especially created for the movie. It still exists today.

Silent Bob speaks a total of 102 words.

When the Miramax Security Guard apprehends Jay and Silent Bob, he makes a call to "Echo Base". "Echo Base" was the name of the rebel outpost on Hoth in the Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

When Jay and Bob are walking along the Miramax lot, in the background, men in black suits and a man in a copsuit walk along, with one of the men in black suits bleeding from the stomach- a reference to Reservoir Dogs

When Chrissy (Ali Larter) pulls a knife on Jay (Jason Mewes) he says "What with the knife, we havin' cake or something?" This line was originally written for the train scene in Dogma, another Kevin Smith movie.

During the final scene where a police cruiser containing Justice is driving away, a construction worker clutching a piece of scaffolding to his shoulder can be spotted walking by. This same construction worker appears numerous times throughout Mallrats holding the same piece of scaffolding.

For the posters and DVD cover of this movie, the production company simply re-used Chris Rock's promotional photo from Dogma

Several scenes in the movie, most notably the "Suzanne" subplot and The Fugitive spoof, were lifted from Smith's graphic novel "Chasing Dogma".

Revealing mistake: When Jay and Silent Bob release the animals from the test clinic, at least two of the CG mice run through Bob's foot.

Revealing mistake: As Jay and Silent Bob run from the animal testing center, a Silent Bob and a large German Sheperd run through each other.

Crew or equipment visible: A crew member is reflected off the back of Holden's laptop.

Revealing mistake: When Holden shows Jay and Silent Bob a web site in which anonymous film geeks trash their names, the page's address is seen, and it starts with "file:///Macintosh%..." rather than "http://", meaning that the page is coming directly from that computer, not the Internet.

Continuity error: When Brodie shows Jay and Silent Bob the 'Bluntman & Chronic' article in Wizard magazine, there is a picture of Holden and Banky (obviously lifted from the DVD cover of Chasing Amy) but when Jay and Bob take the magazine to Holden's apartment the picture on the inside has changed to a still image from Chasing Amy.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: Preppy Guy's mouth in the Goodwill Hunting 2 spoof doesn't match the words we hear.

Continuity error: The girls run out of the diamond exchange before they can put on their shoes, but as they get into their car, they are wearing shoes again.

Continuity error: On the "Bluntman and Chronic" movie set, a coffee cup jumps between Chaka and his assistant.

Error in geography: When Jay and Silent Bob are hitchhiking in Indiana, mountains (of which Indiana has none) are clearly visible in the background.

Continuity error: When Brodie is restocking the comics and talking to Jay and Silent Bob in Brodie's Secret Stash, a guy is standing there reading a comic book. In the next shot, he is standing there with his arms closed. There was a shot in between where Brodie slaps the comic book out of the guy's hands because he is damaging the spine, but it was cut.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: While Pumpkin Escobar and Jay are showing each other their "union cards", there is a close-up of Pumpkin's card. During the close-up, Pumpkin is speaking, but his lips do not move.

Revealing mistake: Silent Bob manages to type the message board post by repeatedly pressing only the space bar.

Revealing mistake: When the animal's are running out of the test lab, one monkey comes out of the left-hand plant pot without coming out of the door first.

Continuity error: While the girls are on the balcony, the brown jacket on the banister changes from being rolled up loosely to being folded and back again between shots.

Continuity error: When Justice is talking to Willenholly, her left hand moves repeatedly from her knee to the floor between shots.

Continuity error: In Brodie's Secret Stash, Brody stands facing Jay and Bob, but the same comic, "Cable", as well as those around it, is behind all of them. It is unlikely the exact layout on the racks would be duplicated so close to each other, and no copies could be seen as Brody was walking backwards, placing comics in the rack.

Continuity error: Positioning of the big pile of paper Silent Bob tosses on the ground changes between shots when Jay and Silent Bob beat up "Magnolia Fan" at the end of the film.

Continuity error: When Jay and Silent Bob are sitting in the desert with the orangutan, the orangutan's diaper disappears and reappears repeatedly between shots.

Continuity error: The position of the police cars before and after the van explodes (one car stops in front of the van before the explosion, but is further away later).

Continuity error: When Jay and Silent Bob are beating up the clerk at a store at the end of the movie, they hit him and a sign falls down onto the counter. In the next shot, the sign is gone. In the third shot, the sign returns.

Revealing mistake: During the final shoot-out, the girls empty their magazines (the slides on their guns lock back)... but they continue to fire anyway, with CG muzzle-blasts and all.

Continuity error: When Holden is reading off of moviepoopshoot.com, he says, "Fuck Jay and Silent Bob. Fuck them up their stupid asses," but when Jay and Silent Bob meet up with the kid that wrote that line on the website, they read "Fuck them and their stupid asses."

Continuity error: When Jay and Silent Bob catch a ride in the van, Brent touches Justice's leg. Brent is first seen to move his left hand, but in the next shot we see his right hand on Justice's leg. We then see him retract his left hand again in the following shot.

A number of scenes were cut from the final print of the movie. One of which is a scene of Jay and Silent Bob on the bus to Los Angeles, with Jay asking the bus driver are they in Hollywood yet, then Jay taunting a little child in a helmet who gives them "the finger" and Silent Bob attacks the boy taking his Nintendo game away. Later Jay and Silent Bob are shown being thrown off the bus for smoking pot in the toilet in back of the bus. All of the secnes deleted/edited of the lesbian relationship between Chrissy and Missy which includes a shot of them in the convenience store kissing and Justice telling Sissy that them reading Anais Nin wouldn't amount to anything. An additional scene shown in the trailer, but not in the feature is with Jay and Silent Bob with the L.A. hookers on their first arrival in Los Angeles where Jay offers them a long and filthy list of things they want to do with them and the hookers walk away disgusted themselves. Another scene in the motel where Justice seals the diamonds and then sneaks into the bedroom crawling on her hand and knees where Chrissy and Missy are on the bed, covered by a sheet, making out while Sissy is having sex witht he pizza delivery guy against the vanity. Justice steals their car keys from the bedside table and escapes in their car, then the trio in varied states of undress, run out after Justice as she drives away.

The Enhanced CD Soundtrack has a video for "Jay's Rap 2001", in which is shown a number of shots that did not make it into the final film mixed in with those that did. These shots include: (1) Jay and Bob in a plane, (2) the two drinking beers (at the appropriate moment of "Jay's Rap") on the set of "Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season", (3) Jay and Bob outside a parking lot, (4) an alternate take of Jay miming sucking a breast in "Brodie's Comic Stash", (5) Jay smoking a cigarette during the "E.T."-influenced bike scene, (6) Bob stepping out of a room with a goofy grin on his face while Jay tokes up, and finally ends with (7) a hilarious blooper where Jay offers Suzanne the orangutan a hit off a joint.

The first internet-only trailer contains some shots and alternate takes that were not used in the final film. They are as follows: (1) a shot of Justice slamming Sissy against a green tube during their fight scene, (2) an extra line of Justice's dialogue, (3) an alternate take of Brent's "watch the language, little boy" line, (4) Jay screaming "YO, LUNCHBOX, HURRY UP!", (5) Jay's "master of the clit" line in color rather than the black-and-white shot that is in the film, (5) Jon Stewart against a bluescreen saying that "the C.L.I.T. is not something to be played with", (6) an alternate take of Steve Kmetko saying, "Is Hollywood ready for Jay and Silent Bob?", (7) Randal talking about ABC cancelling both him and Dante, (8) an alternate shot of the orangutans dressed as Jay and Bob, and, finally, (9) a non-ADR'ed Shannen Doherty yelling "CUT!". This trailer is available on the soundtrack CD.

The theatrical trailer contains one snip of a deleted scene of Chrissy (Ali Larter) kissing Missy (Jennifer Schwalbach-Smith)

In one of the R-rated trailers for the movie, Randal tells Dante "If you'd been funnier than that, ABC wouldn't have cancelled us." (A reference to the short lived Clerks cartoon series on ABC.) This line is not in the film.

In an earlier test screening of "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" the discussion between Marshall Willenholly and the Boulder Police about the search for Jay, Silent Bob and the missing orangutang was much longer. It also included an homage/referrence to the famous scene in The Fugitive where Tommy Lee Jones briefs the marshalls on "the hard-target search."

Kevin Smith's film festival, Vulgarthon 2002, included the deleted scenes which will be shown on the DVD, they include:

o An ABC joke in the Quick Stop

o Another appearance by the "Two packs of wraps" kids.

o A scene in the stash where Brodie interacts with a customer

o A scene in the stash where Brodie impersonates Jay

o A scene where Holden shows Jay and Bob a site called donkeyshow.com

o A cut scene of Jay and Bob on the bus to Hollywood

o More of Jay with the nun

o An alternate, filthier take of the Scooby Doo scene

o An small part in the Mooby fast food joint where Jay reads an E-mail on moviepoopshoot.com

o More of the scene in the Van where Brent sings

o A scene between Brent and a CGI created sheep

o A scene where Jay and Bob try to lean on the wall of the store

o More of the scene in the store and a scene of Jay singing

o A small scene of the jewel theifs getting dressed

o A alteernate introduction to Willenholly

o More of Willenholly at the scene of the crime

o More of the news report with Willenholly including a scene at the Stash

o A scene where Jay talks to hookers in Hollywood

o More of the scene on the balcony with the girls

o More of Justice escaping with the diamonds

o A Mallrats reference on the Scream 3 set

o A scene where Jay and Bob watch a scene of Daredevil being shot

o More on the set of Bluntman and Chronic

o More of Banky and Hopper at the premiere; this scene reveals that Banky is gay and also includes the reappearance of Scott Mosier as the "tracer" guy from Chasing Amy.

Viewers of the R1 DVD version who choose the French language option see a different version of the opening credits, with French text substituted, though the title of the film remains in English.

Hooker #1: Hey, little man! You want some of this?

Hooker #2: How 'bout you, big boy?

Hooker #1: You got 50 bucks, we can get Nasty.

Jay: Oh, yeah? How nasty?

Hooker #2: As nasty as you want to be, papi.

Jay: Oh, all right. Well, first, I want you to tongue my bung, while you juggle my balls in one hand, and play with my asshole with the other, but don't stick you're finger in. Then I want to pinky you while I stick in your fuckin' friend's brown, while Silent Bob watches, and fuckin' spanks it in a Dixie cup. After that, I want to smell your titties for a while, and you can pull my nutsack up over my dick so it looks like a bullfrog. Then I want you to fuckin' flick my nuts while your friend spanks me off in the same Dixie cup that Silent Bob jizzed in. Then, we throw the Dixie cup out.

Hooker #1: Oh, that's it, honey! I quit! This job just passed the point of no return!

Jay: What? You said "nasty!"  Man, chicks in Hollywood are so stuck-up.
